Innovators need to focus

Innovators need to focus
(World saving vs Silly apps)
by Charles Jo (@charlesjo) 10/26/14

There’s ongoing plea for innovators to stop creating silly apps & instead focus on world problems.

But these “silly” apps of today can be possible powerful tools of tomorrow.

We forget that Twitter was labeled silly when it debuted.

But Twitter & other social networks have been used by the oppressed to challenge dictatorships.

So we need to encourage all innovators to create more novel tools — not less.

For those whose sense the calling for world saving solutions, please continue to invest time & energy on those projects

rather than precious time berating other innovators.

After pouring your heart & soul into your ideal solution, you still have energy left, then join a non-profit.

Or join or create a cause in sites like Coactify.org.

It’s only 5 days until Product Hunt’s first hackathon and we’re honored to have some awesome judges and unique prizes.

The top 3 hacks will get an opportunity to interview with 500 Startups and Techstars in addition to office hours with YC’s Alexis Ohanian. The grand prize winner will receive a meeting with a partner from Andreessen Horowitz.

RSVP here and join us at Y Combinator HQ. If you can’t make it to Mountain View, hack in your pajamas remotely. Add your info here and we’ll send details. :)

P.S. For inspiration, here’s a collection of community-made Product Hunt apps.
